Get to Know Dr. Jake Shlaferman
Dr. Shlaferman has been practicing dentistry for several years now, and the best part about his job is being able to have a lifelong impact on his patients’ lives, helping better their smiles and oral and overall health. With compassion and attention to detail at the forefront of how he practices dentistry, he’s always excited to build lifelong relationships with new patients. Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?
Early on in high school, Dr. Shlaferman thought he wanted to become an engineer because he enjoys math and science so much. He also loved the idea of being able to work with his hands. Eventually he decided against engineering because he wanted a career that gave him the opportunity to work with people and have a direct impact on their lives.
He had a great relationship with his dentist, who was an amazing person that was excellent at building lasting relationships with her patients. In fact, she saw generations of families at the same time—everyone trusted her! It was then when Dr. Shlaferman decided he wanted to pursue a career in dentistry, where he would be able to meld everything he loves: getting to work with his hands, apply science and math to his work, and hone in on his communication skills to make a lasting impression on his patients.
Where Did You Study Dentistry?
Dr. Shlaferman completed his undergraduate studies at Emmanuel College in Boston and earned his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry degree from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine (Go Huskies!). While in dental school, he gained general dental skills utilizing top-of-the-line technology to provide outstanding care to patients.
After his four years at dental school, he pursued advanced training to gain further experience providing specialized procedures. He attended the General Practice Residency program at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington, one of the most renowned GPR programs in the nation. While here, he gains specialized training in dental implant treatment, root canal treatment, sedation dentistry, pediatric dentistry, and treating patients with medically complex backgrounds, including those with special needs.
Dr. Shlaferman has also worked at a hospital providing emergency dental care to patients in operating rooms and emergency rooms, so he’s excellent at working in urgent situations and helping his patients feel calm.
Dr. Shlaferman also remains an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, New Hampshire Dental Society, and the Academy of General Dentistry.
Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?
Originally from Chicopee, Massachusetts, Dr. Shlaferman grew up in a close-knit family of Polish descent. His mom immigrated to the States as a young child from Poland, so he spent most of his childhood celebrating holidays and Polish traditions with his family. His family also consists of his younger sister and younger brother, as well as his girlfriend, who has been his number one supporter since they first met in college!
Whenever he isn’t at the practice, he enjoys taking advantage of the New England summer months by being outdoors. He enjoys golfing, hiking, kayaking, visiting the beach, and playing pickleball. He’s also a die-hard Boston sports fan and loves snowboarding! An interesting fact about Dr. Shlaferman is that, while in college, he worked for the Boston Red Sox!
