What Are Implant Dentures?

Dental implants are prosthetic tooth roots. They come in the form of small titanium posts, which we surgically place into the jawbone. Gradually, they form a strong bond with the surrounding bone. This process allows them to serve as an extremely sturdy base of support for various types of restorations, including crowns, bridges, and even full dentures.

There are two main categories of implant dentures, and our team will help you decide which is the best fit for your situation.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

As their name suggests, fixed implant dentures are permanently attached to the underlying support posts; they can only be removed by a dental professional. Many patients choose this option because they value the convenience of having a 24/7 smile. However, it does require greater jawbone density and more dental implant posts than a removable prosthetic.

Removable Implant Dentures

A removable denture easily snaps onto and off of small attachments on top of the dental implants. This type of prosthetic can be supported with as few as 2 – 5 posts per arch, making it a great option for individuals who have lost some bone density in their jaw.

The Implant Denture Procedure

The implant denture procedure is unique for each patient, but it generally follows these four steps:

  • During a consultation, we will determine if implant dentures are right for you and start planning your next steps.
  • We will surgically place the implants into your jawbone at precise, pre-planned locations.
  • Over a period of a few months, the implants will bond with your jawbone. Afterward, you may undergo a second surgery so we can place small connector pieces (called abutments) on the implants).
  • To restore your smile, we will design and place your beautiful new teeth.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

Most adults with significant tooth loss can get implant dentures, either immediately or after preparatory care. Here are some common traits of a good candidate for this procedure:

  • Your jawbone is strong enough to support the implant posts.
  • You do not have active gum disease or other health problems that might compromise your implants’ success.
  • You have good habits, including a thorough oral hygiene routine, that will minimize the risk of dental implant failure.

Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

Implant dentures offer some amazing benefits!

  • Strength and stability: Some types of implant dentures can provide a bite force that is almost equal to that of natural teeth. That means you should be able to enjoy any food, including those that are off-limits with traditional dentures.
  • Jawbone preservation: Dental implants stimulate the jawbone and can prevent it from shrinking after tooth loss.
  • Longevity: Dental implants may last a lifetime, and the restorations on top of them can also endure for a long time.
  • Beauty: We carefully design implant dentures so they look very natural and complement your facial features.
